D.I.Y.

It doesn’t have to be intimidating. It can be healing.

Wabi Sabi

Wabi Sabi is an ancient philosophy that celebrates flaws. It is about finding the beauty in the imperfect, impermanent and the incomplete. Embracing the reality that nothing in this life is ever going to be perfect, and that the idea that good and bad work together to create who we are.

Kintugi is the Japanese art of fusing broken pottery back together with gold. Essentially making the statement that even though something WAS broken, it can still be put back together and be more beautiful than before.

These ideas are beautiful metaphors to turn our heads away from the unattainable concept of perfection and encourage us to find our strength between our broken pieces.

How these concepts can apply to your home.

Wabi sabi is something that is used in design quite often. In your home, wabi sabi is what everyone who watches HGTV on a regular basis calls “character”. Usually this involves a piece that is made of rough wood, antiques, or something that tells a story. Enter the DIY project... NOW is the perfect time to embark on your 1st DIY journey. You are home more with your family and it is so rewarding to create something together. Will it be perfect? No. Will you have learned something in the process? Yes. Will you have a great story on the other side? Absolutely!!!

I have been saving furniture for YEARS. I find great pieces at thrift stores, estate sales and sometimes on move out day in a college town. You just need to look at a piece with eyes for what it could be, not what it is. You might even have a candidate in your home already.  Wallpapering the back of a china cabinet with a chic wallpaper could be a quick project that just gives it more personality. Buying things that have imperfections or something that needs some love, saves you quite a bit of money and allows you to have exactly what you want.

Every home needs some Wabi Sabi. Something that was broken and made beautiful again. Something imperfect, that has a story, that you fixed with your own hands. Something everyone else walked past because they weren’t able to see the potential. I guess what I’m saying is…

Always look for the potential.

Always look for the beauty.

Your home will thank you for it.
